TRAGEDIE OF LEAR
"Tragedie of Lear" is a re-focused approach to Shakespeare's King Lear. Using the Quarto as our source, we present a story of two families: Lear and his daughters and Gloster and her two sons. In our vision, Lear starts the play already in the throws of Lewy Body Dementia and Edgar starts as an addict. It is a story of families, aging and mental health. What happens to family dynamics once a mental health issue is introduced into the relationships? How do members of the family suffer alongside the individual who has the condition? We also see old age portrayed in all its vulnerability, pride, and wisdom—another reason this most devastating of Shakespeare’s tragedies is also perhaps his most moving.
